droidMAKER by Michael Rubin

droidMAKER by Michael RubinHere’s a great read for all you Star Wars movie fans, though it does talk about a lot more than just that series. Michael Rubin was a former member of Lucasfilm’s computer division, and he writes about the birth of Pixar, digital video editing, videogame avatars, THX sound, and lots more. Of course, he also talks about George Lucas, Pixar and how technology has changed our modern movie-going experience.

But even so, this book is filled with tons of film stills, photos and commentary from some of the best movies of the past decade. X-Men - The Last Stand

X-Men - The Last StandX-men… Just another comic recreation? Well yes and no. I quite liked this series. The first was okay, the second was much better and The Last Stand has propelled itself to the good category in my book. The storyline is a bit more complicated (don’t take an IQ test beforehand, not that complicated…) and the effects are just amazing. Ian Mckellen is just so cool as Magneto, it’s like a new-age mutated Ghadlaf!

Archos Gmini 402

Archos Gmini 402Don’t like iPod? I’m about 85% sure that the Archos Gmini is not only an alternative but a better alternative. The looks are really great, smooth, clean lines are dominant and it just looks really good overall. It can be used to play many music and video formats, it can be used as a photo wallet and also plays games using the Mophum engines that a load of phones use. It of course uses USB to connect and I think I’d choose a Gmini over an iPod any time because of its features, and also because well, EVERYONE has an iPod ;-)

Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick

Selected Stories of Philip K. DickAs I love to read, (when I get the time to) I will share a good writer/book with you now and again as I have done in the past (see Terry Pratchett). All of you know Philip K. Dick, Minority Report anybody? Weather you liked the film or not, the story and idea is great and I couldn’t even say it’s his best. He also wrote the idea behind Total Recall, and both stories are in this book (and are sufficiently different than the films to enjoy all over again). Altogether you get 20 stories which should get you acquainted with his style, I hope you like it.

Peer To Peer Movies

Peer To Peer Movies

Now here is an interesting concept.  You sign up at Peerflix and create a free account.  Next, you simply create a list of all the DVDs you want and a list of all the DVDs that you own (and would not mind giving away).  And then you wait… Soon you will start receiving requests for the DVDs you own.  Simply send them out and in no time you will also start receiving the DVDs you want!  Of course, most of these will be used, but that’s not an issue if you just want to watch the movie.  It does cost 99 cents per trade, so in the end its like renting DVDs for 99 cents with the benefit of being able to keep the ones you love and never worrying about late fees, etc.  P2P has come a long way since the days of Napster :-)

For a limited time, get one FREE DVD when you join. (No monthly fees, just 99 cents per trade after the first FREE one)

Aeon Flux (Collector’s Edition)

Aeon Flux (Collector's Edition)I honestly have no idea why critics threw so many stones at this movie. I won’t go as far as saying that it deserves an avalanche of Oscars, but all in all, it has an interesting storyline and is visually quite impressive. Cool high tech stuff, intricacies, special agents, oppression, future society… Everything is given to make this a fun ride. Plus, one of the stars (Marton Csokas) is Hungarian like I am, awesome! :)

Viewsonic 32″ Widescreen LCD HDTV with Speakers

Viewsonic 32Always in search of the sub-$1000 LCD tv, this nice 32″ ViewSonic LCD HDTV definitely caught my eye.  It has everything needed to watch tv straight out of the box, including powerful 10-watt stereo speakers, and it also has all the options and connections needed to put together a complete high-definition home entertainment system.  I am still looking for something closer to the 37″ range, but the 1366×768 resolution and 1000:1 contrast ratio is a definite plus on this set.  Plus, its made by ViewSonic which is generally a brand you can trust when it comes to displays.  All in all, a very good buy, especially at this price.

Philips 37″ HD Flat Panel LCD TV

Philips 37

Seems like plasma tvs are on the way out and LCDs are in, at least for the smaller screen sizes.  Now that LCD tvs are getting more affordable, I would love to get one for my bedroom. This Philips 37″ LCD TV (37PF7320A) really caught my eye.  Most of the LCDs this size cost quite a bit more, and the ones that don’t are usually from no-name brands.  Add on the fact that this tv has a stunning design, comes with all the latest technology like HDMI, integrated HDTV, ATSC/NTSC Tuner, CableCARD, and it is definitely a top contender in this category. At 1366×768 pixels, it should display tv and DVDs very nicely. Plus, it comes with a stand if you are not into the wall-mounting thing.

Pirates of the Caribbean (Collector’s Edition)

Pirates of the CaribbeanNow that the second part is out, I guess they are lowering the price of the first one, expecting higher demand. Well, all the better for us! I think the original Pirates of the Caribbean is such a great film and this 2-disc collector’s edition has lots to offer. Action/Adventure films usually take themselves too seriously or are a complete catastrophe. It was so great to just enjoy a film for once. The plot will not boggle your mind like the matrix but its pretty enjoyable, the acting is amazing (Johnny Depp deserves an Oscar for this) and the visuals are stunning. Follow Jack Sparrow (Depp) and Will Turner (Bloom) as they rush to break a curse, save a lady (Knightley), avenge a mutiny organized by Barbossa (Rush) and have great fun doing so. A definite must buy, must watch (over and over)!

Logitech Harmony 550 Advanced Universal Remote

Logitech Harmony 550 Advanced Universal Remote

After watching the movie, “Click“, I just had to look for a universal remote (BTW, its a great movie).  Ok, so I didn’t find anything quite like the one in that movie, but I did stumble upon this great remote by Logitch. First of all, the Harmony 550 looks great and I would be proud to have this thing sitting on my coffee table.  But aside from its good looks, this remote is also feature-packed with an interactive LCD display and fully backlit keypad.  It replaces up to 15 remote control devices and gives you one-touch access to your entire home entertainment system.  It can be programmed directly from the remote, or you can connect it to your computer for even easier programming.  The cool thing is that you can set up “activities”, such as “Watch TV” or “Watch a DVD” and at the push of a button, the remote will turn on all the required devices, set the inputs and push play. Even your grandma will be able to figure this one out ;-)

Sharp SD-PX2 DVD/CD Mini Stereo System

Sharp SD-PX2 DVD/CD Mini Stereo System

If you are looking for a uniform style when designing your rooms, perhaps you should taker a look at this little media center. The slim chrome style compliments most other hi-tech gadgets in the room, but still keeps its own personality. The Sharp Mini Stereo System is actually a CD-audio, DVD-video player, but is really much more than that. The innovation here is the 1 bit digital audio sound which delivers crystal clear audio because it eliminates the slight degradations in the analog sound. It can also play CD-RW/DVD-RW and MP3 encoding as well. You can throw away (or give me) your old DVD player, CD player and Home Theater System. You can mount this baby on your wall for increased style and can control it from just one universal remote. The price on Overstock is really low now, but you have to buy speakers (preferably surround) and a nice TV to use the unit to its full extent. Try the DELL W4201C HD Plasma TV which includes some pretty decent speakers as well. Have fun with this one!

Nakamichi SoundSpace 8.5 Home Theater System

Nakamichi SoundSpace 8.5 Home Theater SystemThe ultimate in affordable home theater audio. This system is built around 3 separate units: a top-loading DVD player, an AV tuner/processor with a built-in FM tuner and DSP/surround-sound circuit, and a center-channel amplifier. The designers have gone to great lengths to smooth out the sound experience. The subwoofer’s performance is precisely adjusted so that the upper range of the bass output blends smoothly with lower-frequency sound from the satellites, that means you get seamless frequency ranges. I regard everything in a room furniture, from my desk to my mouse on its pad. This theater system will stand proudly as a separate piece of furniture for it looks as great as it sounds.
