From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its boxed set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy. Most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing and they offer an escape from the viewer’s workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one’s own.

This M*A*S*H-tastic 36-disc collection is one for the television time capsule. It contains all 11 seasons of this multi-Emmy Award-winning series, Robert Altman’s 1970 iconoclastic anti-war classic, and two discs of special features, including two reunion specials and a series retrospective episode of A&E’s Biography. Adapted for television by legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart, the series has long since supplanted Altman’s film in the public’s consciousness. Life and death at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War doesn’t seem like ripe fodder for a comedy series, but M*A*S*H masterfully balanced laughter and tears. From the “Pilot” to the feature-length finale, “Goodbye, Farewell & Amen,” still the most-watched episode in history, this essential collection honors one of television’s greatest half-hours.

Such a simple idea–yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes places over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes. Everything takes place in real time, which means no flashbacks, no flash-forwards, no handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked so things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Like The Sopranos, 24 is one of those series that future TV thrillers will be measured against.

(Previous Price: $161.99) This primate-vs-man epic–spanning four movies, a TV series, and an animated series–was as integral to the 1970s as Led Zeppelin or muscle cars. How to properly pay tribute to a franchise about intelligent apes roaming a post-apocalyptic earth? In an ape head boxed set. The collection contains 14 discs efficiently packaged in a fold-out book that slides into a bust of Caesar. The set is limited to 10,000 copies and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Whenever I see a good movie, I feel the urge to push it down the throat of my friends, and after the initial shock, they usually like them. I found Prestige on the top shelf of my DVD rental, and because I love Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, I decided to take a look. I discovered that Michael Cane, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie play a major part in the film, and Andy Serkis (Gollam) is a treat. The film is actually a period piece with a twist, it follows the life of two magicians, who eventually turn against each other and undermine the other’s production whenever they can. It’s a great film and the actors don’t fail to deliver, although it was weird to hear Bale’s accent. For those of you who have a Blu-Ray player I have included the link to the Blue-Ray version, and for those of you who’ve seen the movie, why not check out the original book?

A while back, we had a post about the Logitech Harmony 550, which is quite a cool piece of remote control fun, but take a look at the Logitech Harmony 1000. First of all, it has a 3.5″ color touch screen, by far the biggest I’ve ever seen on something like this. Is that you PDA? No, it’s just my intelligent, touch screen universal remote. Well excuse me. You can control multiple devices (at once), control your DVD, HDTV screen ratio, CD player, etc, etc. All in such a cool device, that should go well in any living room, what a great centerpiece eh?

Chappelle is known wildly for his too short run with Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show. I’ve attended a couple of his stand up club shows and they are so hilarious.
There are a couple of dvds out there that may fail to capture his awesomeness (a bit older stuff). Killin’ Em Softly is the better one of the two. Until you catch him live, you should check this out.

Not everyone liked Emilio Estevez’ heavy handed faux re-creation of the day leading up to Robert Kennedy’s assassination in 1968. I thought it was actually a pretty decent drama and overall one of the better movies of 2006.
Sure a ton of things don’t make sense (why is Helen Hunt with super old though super cool Josiah Bartlet/Charlie Sheen?) but Frodo (Elijah Wood) always makes me cry. The movie also stars Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone and Lindsay Lohan.
A critic made a joke about how Weinstein spread some mojo to get the Golden Globe nomination, I say good for Bobby!
