What do children hate? Spelling and writing. What do they love? Garfield! Time to combine the two to make a fun activity pack for 3rd graders. In my time (hah) I loved Garfield and read every book, comic there was, I even had a Garfield mail pack. There are 25 fun filled exercise to keep children busy for hours and also a 26 page activity booklet. The while system is replayable so that children can go through the activities again and again and learn more advanced spelling rules too.

Capricious, clever, funny, farcical, unpredictable and just great. This is my description of Beaver and Steve (Thank God for thesauruses). The drawing is simple but simply amazing. The storyline is unpredictable and addictive, guaranteed to tickle your funnybone. Beaver is a “slightly” smug, know-it-all beaver (how strange) and Steve (a dinosaur thing?) is just always up to something. Anyone who appriciates heavy sarcasm, irony and good old side splitting jokes will love this book that contains 112 unfeasable adventures and also 3 pages of material that can’t bee seen anywhere else.

This post is biased. I love Terry Pratchett and have read all of his Discworld novels. This is one of his latest work sand is truly a masterpiece, amongst the top 3 Discworld books. What grasps me about Pratchett aside from the fact that his books crack me up is that he can tell such an amazing story. If you have read any book of his you know how he can either slap you in the face with a twist or just shift the tone slightly, without you knowing it, leading you in a new direction. In Thud! Sam Vimes, commander of the City Watch and also a Duke (how he hates this fact…) leads an investigation that leaves him in the middle of an age long dispute between the dwarves and trolls. He must find out the secret of Koom Valley before all out war breaks, but most importantly he must read “Where is my cow” to his son each night without fail. Prepare to laugh out loud on the subway, bite your nails and suffer from sleep deprivation. (European cover is shown, the US version has a different one)

My brother has a very cute little girl and when she was about 3 we bought her a picture book (with some words as well) with sounds. She had so much fun and was so cute and I swear she learned 10 new words in half an hour. Disney’s treasure planet is filed with beautiful and vivid artwork, text suitable and tailored to children and a 16 key soundpad with built in speakers. Prepare to live in a cacophony of sound pollution until the batteries run out, but the main thing is that your child will have a good time.

Lego is definitely one of the best inventions of our time. Apart from the fact that it is a whole lot o’ fun it also teaches some basic and intermediate skills. I was also raised in an environment where my parents let me play video games without a problem. Their view was that games do teach some good stuff, like reflexes, independent thinking, etc. Now Lego has superbly combined these two elements with their new NXT system. The system is not that simple… it consists of a main, programmable brain and various addons like touch, light, sound, unltrasonic sensors and what-not. To get a hold of the new technology and its programmable capability Brian Bagnall has released a new book called Maximum Lego NXT introducing this technology. The book contains basic and advanced programming, ready to run Java programs and instructions so be sure to get hold of this book for yourself too. Beware, your child might rapidly become smarter than you! The book is available for pre-order only and prices are only guaranteed if you place an order now.

Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate guitar player, this is THE BIBLE for you. I have just placed an order after leafing through it in a shop. Most guitarists are bounded by the chord shapes they already know. C, D, E in open format and power chords are the point where most people go. So much more can be done with chords. It’s the easiest thing to learn as a student and the hardest thing to master as well. Impress your friends when asked to play a C-chord. Play a whole sequence of melodical C’s. Just listen to Joe Satriani, you’ll get what I’m talking about.

I’ve only played golf a couple of times (except mini-golf) and now I can almost hold the club correctly! For me golf is not just about the game. Its about the mentality, the comfortable pace and most of all the scenery. I love the beautiful locations where they tend to put these courses and the amazing “garden-work” they do. I recommend this book to players and enthusiasts alike, but its not only I who recommend it. Nick Faldo and Christie Kerr (pro golfers), Pete Dye and Tom Doak (course architects), Brian McCallen (editor and author), and Donald Trump also see it fit for a wide reading audience. With the U.S. Open going on right now, its a great time to read more about this great game.

Do you ever bother you wife/husband by reading at night? Your troubles are now over with the Zelco booklight. Fully opened, the light fits in your palm and can be clipped to the side of your book for maximum comfort. LED edition means that the two separate light sources are heat free and produce light that is easy on your eyes. Plus, you won’t brun your arm every time you flip the page. The lifespan of the light source is a whopping 100,000 hours which can be used for 14 hours continuously with the 4 onboard AAA batteries or for almost 11.4 years with an AC adaptor. It is 4 ½ inches collapsed, 7 inches fully extended and weighs a hefty 2 ½ ounces. I think its time to start buying some books!
If you’re a Da Vinci Code fan, or if you just want to see what all the fuss is about, the audio book is a great way to experience the story! I recently finished “listening” to my copy and I must say it was great. The reading is done in such a way that it is very movie-like, with different voices for each character, French accents and dramatic tones. Its a must have for fans and a great way to experience the book for first-timers.
The CD version usually sells for $30-$45 dollars, but you can get the downloadable version (which is what I have) for FREE. The catch is that you have to try out Audible’s audio book service, which lets you choose from over 27,000 audio books and download them to your iPod or mp3 player. Pretty cool.
