Creative Photoshop

Creatove PhotoshopA while back we had Photoshop CS2 on Stuffiti, and since then, the new version, CS3 has arrived. Today I want to introduce a great book, for those of you who have some skill in art and Photoshop. To tell you the truth, I really enjoy dabbling in Photoshop, and trying the techniques in these books, but I have no artistic talent whatsoever, so perhaps amateurs can have some fun with this book too. The author, Derek Lee, a world renowned artist, will show you how to paint, sculpt, use comic book coloring techniques and so on. If this is your cup of tea, be sure to look into it, despite the fact that the freaky cover art is a bit scary (she looks like a weird Klingon warrior).

The Prestige

PrestigeWhenever I see a good movie, I feel the urge to push it down the throat of my friends, and after the initial shock, they usually like them. I found Prestige on the top shelf of my DVD rental, and because I love Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, I decided to take a look. I discovered that Michael Cane, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie play a major part in the film, and Andy Serkis (Gollam) is a treat. The film is actually a period piece with a twist, it follows the life of two magicians, who eventually turn against each other and undermine the other’s production whenever they can. It’s a great film and the actors don’t fail to deliver, although it was weird to hear Bale’s accent. For those of you who have a Blu-Ray player I have included the link to the Blue-Ray version, and for those of you who’ve seen the movie, why not check out the original book?

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl

calamity.jpgI know, how cool are books? ‘Calamity Physics by first time author Marisha Pessl is actually the best book I’ve read in the last couple of years. It’s about a young girl finishing high school trying to solve the murder of her favorite teacher. You got cliques, a precocious young girl and chock full of references that will keep you interested for days.

The book came out in 2006 with much fanfare (best seller status), it was hailed as one of the top 10 books by the NYT last year.

At over 500 pages, you might be tempted to check out the audiobook, to be released on May 10.

Street Art: The Spray Files

streetartthesprayfiles.jpgGraffiti books are a dime a dozen but this is one of the best I’ve seen. “Street Art: The Spray Files” was released in 2005 and compiled by Louis Bou.

He covers graffiti, stencils and stickers. It’s a good survey book though it is unusually heavy on Barcelona (delightful city, you will want to visit) and Paris. I wish there was more emphasis on New York (or San Francisco).

You’ll appreciate the stunning pictures with the caption to identify who’s work you are looking at. For your coffee table or your art friend’s, this is a great buy.

Dilbert: 2007 Day-To-Day Calendar

Dilbert: 2007 Day-To-Day CalendarI remember back in high school, I had a Physics teacher who had a Far Side day-to-day calendar on his desk. Each day we would look forward to checking out the latest comic, and it was actually one of the few things to look forward to in school. Well, Dilbert is just as funny, especially if you have to deal with office politics, buzzword-spouting bosses, annoying coworkers, and pointless assignments each and every day just like he does :-)

Scaffold Five-Shelf Bookcase

Scaffold Five-Shelf BookcaseHere’s a great looking solution for storing those old books and knick knacks that you have lying around the house.  As you can see, this bookcase closely resembles the scaffolding that is found around construction sites, but in a cool way.  I find the lines very modern and appealing, and just like real scaffolding, this bookcase is very solid.  You can even line a couple of these up for a bigger impact, especially if you have a long, bare wall.

Statistics for Business and Economics

Statistics for Business and EconomicsPlease, don’t run away just yet :) If you are a businessman, or a website admin making sense of webstats or just a student in need, Statistics for Business and Economics is for you. It’s the best statistics book I’ve seen yet and I’ve seen quite a few in my time… It emphasizes on understanding and using data to your advantage, not just calculating standard deviation and such. If you like some math, like me (I know, it’s sad) then you’ll like this book.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy 50th Aniversary Edition

Lord of the Rings Trilogy 50th Aniversary EditionLord of the Rings is quite a favorite of mine and being the reading kind that I am, I would really recommend reading the book. Just like the Film Trilogy you can get all three books for a great price and read about some adventures you haven’t seen on film (like Tom Bombadil) and read some appendices to go with it. I also like stylish books, so I would definitely go for this edition, it doesn’t cost more than the three-part hardbacks because of the discount and is a beautiful piece of art that comes with fold out maps, a ribbon placemaker and some added extras.

Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick

Selected Stories of Philip K. DickAs I love to read, (when I get the time to) I will share a good writer/book with you now and again as I have done in the past (see Terry Pratchett). All of you know Philip K. Dick, Minority Report anybody? Weather you liked the film or not, the story and idea is great and I couldn’t even say it’s his best. He also wrote the idea behind Total Recall, and both stories are in this book (and are sufficiently different than the films to enjoy all over again). Altogether you get 20 stories which should get you acquainted with his style, I hope you like it.
