OpenTape: 5 Legitimate Uses ( 1 not so much )

What is OpenTape?

When muxtape closed up shop due to pressure from the RIAA, they left behind a great open source software package called OpenTape… This beautiful piece of software lets you to create your own muxtape clone instantly. Some think this is muxtape’s way of sticking it to the RIAA, since its virtually impossible to police the thousands of individual sites that will pop up because of this.

However, besides the obvious usage scenario… are there actually some legitimate and potentially profitable ways that people can use this software? Let’s take a look at 5 ideas:

1. Podcast Sharing Site

podcast_icon1.jpgImagine a web app where you can upload (or simply subscribe to) your favorite podcasts and listen to them from anywhere. Assuming these podcasts are freely distributable, there should be no legal issues here. Throw in some social networking aspects to this site, and you have a full fledged social podcast sharing site. Not only can you listen to your own subscriptions from any computer at any time… but you can also listen in on what your friends are interested in at any time as well. OpenTape should be able to handle the core functionality easily… just add your own web 2.0 code and you are done!

2. Youtube for Music

youtube_logo.jpgMuxtape is working on a way to help bands introduce their music to the world… but it would be cool if someone created a full-fledged Youtube-like service for music and audio files. Sure, video is more interesting… but with the OpenTape code you can stream user-uploaded music to anyone easily. This would be useful for individual bands and artists just starting out, people who want to show off their mixing talents, or just random audio clips that people find interesting. It will be hard to monitor all the uploads and look for questionable content (as it was on Youtube), but it could be a cool concept if done right.

3. Children’s Music / Public Domain Music Site

music20notes.jpgI recently had a baby boy… and have spent lots of time looking for random children’s music to play for him (think, “twinkle twinkle little star”, “itsy bitsy spider”, etc.). I did end up picking up a couple CDs from the store, but I also found tons of public domain music online. They are scattered all over the place, and it would be great if someone created a searchable site with all this music in one spot. This could extend to different niches, besides just children’s music… but that’s the first thing that came to mind. I could then leave a browser open and play music while watching the baby, allowing me to work peacefully.

4. Voice Over and Sound Byte Marketplace

voiceover.JPGSomeone could use OpenTape to create a marketplace for voice over talents and sound byte creators to sell their products and advertise their services. It could be similar to getty images, where you can easily buy stock images and photos within the self-serve marketplace… however, this site would be even better since anyone could upload and promote their own voice samples or stock sound bytes. The database would then be easily searchable for streaming audio samples, and the actual ful quality audio files could be downloaded instantly after payment is received.

5. Personal Playlist Sharing

remobo_buddy_list.jpgImagine listening to your home music collection from any computer (like at work or traveling with your laptop)… or better yet, sharing your music with just your family and buddies. All you need to do is install OpenTape on your personal computer instead of a public web server and use software like Remobo to give yourself and your friends direct access from any other computer. Remobo will bypass your firewall and NAT settings, so there’s no need for a static IP or special network configurations, making it even easier. But more importantly, it will also encrypt all the data coming to and from your computer (so not even your ISP can see what you are doing). In fact, the network traffic will ust look like you are working from home via a corporate VPN! Here’s a full tutorial on setting this all up easily.

Eagles CD Box Set - Selected Works: 1972-1999

Selected Works: 1972-1999List Price: $59.98
Deal Price: $29.99
You Save: $29.99 (50%)
It’s tough to forecast which bands are built for the long run. The Eagles emerged as part of a genre (country rock) that proved to be a passing fancy. And with two talented frontmen sharing the spotlight, how could artistic differences be fended off for long? But, of course, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and the boys had a juggernaut on their hands, generating a dozen top 10 hits in their initial eight-year spurt. Selected Works: 1972-1999 gathers all the highlights from the group in all of its ’70s and early ’80s glory on three discs, dubbed “The Early Years,” “The Ballads,” and “The Fast Lane.” The handsome box is fleshed out with a live disc from New Year’s Eve 1999. With striking packaging, extensive liner notes, and a surplus of vintage photos, Selected Works is a suitable retrospective on a band that defined the California sound and took it easy, and, in the process, took it to the limit.

Led Zeppelin CD Box Set

Here are the original monsters of rock in all their epic, bombastic glory. The Who may have had more decibels (a dubious distinction), but no band took hard rock higher into the stratosphere than the Zep did with their cosmic mixture of deep blues, gothic melodrama, and the supernatural chops of Page, Plant, Bonham, and Jones. For listeners new to the Zep canon, there’s no better primer of the band’s range and power than this 4 CD box set, compiled and remixed in 1990 by Page himself. All the obvious song choices are here. But even if you’ve already heard “Black Dog” once too often on the car radio, this set wisely spotlights several overlooked gems, including their ultimate blues lament “I’m Gonna Crawl.” It’s a blueprint that later generations of head-bangers tragically failed to follow.

RCA Records introduced the 45 record format in 1949, but it took six years for the seven-inch, two-sided single to gain popularity. And, coincidentally, it was soon after that Elvis Presley signed with the label and released “Heartbreak Hotel,” the first of his 21 chart-topping hits over the next 16 years. This tidy box set repackages every song–with its original B-side–on 20 CD singles, each designed to look like a 45 record and tucked into a colorful cardboard picture sleeve that closely replicates the original single.

Acoustic Research Wireless Stereo Speakers

acoustic research wireless speakersI have a nice little desk set up at home for my laptop and I always plug my speakers in. This is fine if I am sitting at the desk, but what if I want to move a little to the right, or to the bed, or to the balcony? These aren’t huge spaces, but just enough for the cord to bug me, or be too short. A perfect solution is to buy a pair of wireless speakers. You can just plug in the receiver and put the speakers wherever you want, move around, dance with your laptop in hand, etc. I like this model from Acoustic Research because it has a nice discount at buy.com and also because it is reliable with great sound quality. On the downside, you do have to plug in each component (or run the speakers off batteries) and the blue lights on the speakers can become a bit annoying in the dark.

Logitech Harmony 1000

Logitech Harmony 1000A while back, we had a post about the Logitech Harmony 550, which is quite a cool piece of remote control fun, but take a look at the Logitech Harmony 1000. First of all, it has a 3.5″ color touch screen, by far the biggest I’ve ever seen on something like this. Is that you PDA? No, it’s just my intelligent, touch screen universal remote. Well excuse me. You can control multiple devices (at once), control your DVD, HDTV screen ratio, CD player, etc, etc. All in such a cool device, that should go well in any living room, what a great centerpiece eh?

Guitar Hero II Bundle

Guitar Hero II BundleThis game isn’t all that new, but I played it on the PS2 recently and think its tons of fun. If you’re a n00b like me.. here’s a quick summary of how to play. Basically, notes are shown on the screen and you have to strum the guitar controller while pressing the right note button. The best part is that it comes with over 55 real rock tracks that get harder and harder to complete. A definite must have for music fans or those of you going through DDR withdrawal.

The bundle is on sale at Buy.com for $73.99 (originally $79.99) Plus, you can save another $10 if you use Google Checkout.
